About Us

Our Story

Kafountine Connections was set up as The Kora Trust by the founders, students and friends of the Kora Workshop in Kafountine. It was born out of the many significant relationships formed with the local community, and the desire on the part of many visitors to give something back in return for the warm welcome and hospitality they’d received during their stay.

Adam Doughty and Kath Pickering created the Kora Workshop in 2007 and since then it has grown into an environmental enterprise and a place to come and learn the kora ( the traditional 21 stringed African harp, both made and played by Adam). It has been created with care and respect for local tradition and culture. It now attracts visitors from around the world; some to learn the kora and other to relax and explore the region.

We felt it was time to formalise the generosity of these visitors and friends and to form a registered charity with a board of trustees to oversee and so, in 2018, the Kora Trust was born.

In 2024 we decided to operate under the name of Kafountine Connections, partly to bring Kafountine and our relationships with it to the fore and partly to emphasise the Charity’s independence from the Kora Workshop (with which it maintains close connections).
