Welcome

Kafountine Connections

Founded and registered as The Kora Trust, our working name is Kafountine Connections which says more clearly what we are about.

We support projects which benefit people of all ages in the Kafountine area, helping to reduce poverty, increase opportunity and improve the quality of life through:

Education and training

Environmental sustainability

Economic development

We support projects which are created and led by local people

Examples of our work

Here’s a quick overview of projects we have supported. Full details on the Projects We Support page

Youssouph Kalagan Diatta School

Our biggest and longest running commitment is to this pre-school which gives local children the best possible start to their education. We pay the salaries of two teachers and a teaching assistant, have paid for the construction of a second classroom, and help with maintenance, security and play equipment costs. Some of our donors, when visiting Kafountine, have brought little extras with them, like crayons, books, lego and footballs!

Souada Coly Pottery

The Souada Coly Pottery is the last surviving traditional pottery in the Kafountine area. We enabled it to survive a crisis and build for the future by paying for the replacement a broken kiln and construction of a store-room/display area, which has allowed it to attract a tourist market, as well as its traditional local trade.

Nature Vert

Nature Vert is an association formed by local woodworkers and farmers, who were concerned that over-cropping meant that wood would not be available for future generations to carry on their work. We have been able to help with the cost of planting fast-growing hardwoods, as well as with volunteer expenses and the cost of protecting the seedlings in the rainy season

Kalilu

Kalilu is a cooperative which aims to use recycled cuttings from local tailors, weaving them into strands producing a multi-coloured, very strong material, suitable for bags, mats, etc. We have paid for a heavy duty sewing machine for them to produce samples.

Woodworking and shoemaking tools

There are many highly skilled crafts people in Kafountine but for many of them access to good, robust tools is hard. One of our supporters, a shoemaker, organised a collection of tools from his colleagues and a crate of tools was shipped out and distributed amongst local craftspeople
